Everton have issued a statement condemning the death threats made to captain James Tarkowski and his family following Wednesday’s Merseyside derby.

Tarkowski was shown a yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. But the English refereeing body has since admitted the referee had made an error of judgement.

The player’s wife Samantha Tarkowski has said it was unacceptable the death threats made to her husband. And his family in the aftermath of the incident. In a statement,

“People forget that he is more than just a footballer. He is a husband, a son, a brother, a friend and most importantly the father of our two children.

“Football is a sport, but the way some so-called fans behave is disgraceful. The abuse, the threats – it’s not passion, it’s pathetic. We’re real people and this goes far beyond football.”
